Edge of Excitement: Edgewater vs. Seminole Kickoff Classic Recap

Friday Night Lights Return: A Clash of Titans at the Kickoff Classic

Friday, August 18, 2023. 7 PM. Thomas E. Whigham Stadium in Sanford. Fans poured in, their energy contagious. The wait was over: three long years since Edgewater and Seminole clashed in a Kickoff Classic. The weather? Perfect. The crowd? Ecstatic. Both school bands and cheer squads made it clear: Football is back!

The game took an electrifying turn right at the start! Seminole's QB left spectators gasping with an 80-yard scramble. But Edgewater wasn't backing down. Our shining Junior RB, Christian Henderson (#4), showcased his skills with a remarkable 54-yard run. And then there was AJ Hughley (#16), darting a jet sweep for a 7-yard touchdown – brushing off and leaping over challenges like a pro. The cheers grew louder!

However, Seminole had their moments too. Their defense pinned us back, causing a safety, and their QB found his target with a stunning 25-yard touchdown pass. Despite those punches, Edgewater's defense showed strength. Take Ja'Torian Mack's (#18) heart-stopping 4th down pass breakup in the end zone, or Zion Mitchell's (#15) sharp fumble recovery. And fans definitely won't forget that 35-yard pass from our Sophomore QB, Michael Clayton (#7), to Senior star and LSU commit, Cai Bates (#1). We had our moments of challenge, like the muffed punt return, but this was about learning and growing.

It’s essential to remember this wasn’t just any game. It was a test, a temperature check for both teams. A scrimmage to see where we stand. Both coaches now have a better idea of what to work on as we approach the real deal – the regular season.

A giant shoutout to the EHS parents, fans, alumni, and especially, 'The Flock' for their unwavering support. We also can't forget the immense help from our EHS Athletic Trainers and the generous Taylor, Starkey, and Bankowitz families. That pre-game meal? Delicious and energy-boosting!

Now, gear up, Edgewater fans! Next Friday, we're back on our turf at Frank E. Lough Field, and it's not just any game. It's the Battle of College Park against our rivals, Bishop Moore High School. Are you ready? We sure are!
